How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes The Easy Way
When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes???
When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes???
Sooooo, when was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Me, I cleaned mine a couple of days ago (largely because of this post.) I will say that I'm typically pretty good about cleaning them once a month. But lately, I've admittedly slacked off. And while we are on the honesty track, I really cannot remember the last time I cleaned them. Which is equally scary and YUCKY at the same time.
Dirrty (with 2 R's)
Dirty brushes are the absolute perfect breading ground for bacteria and fungus. Not to mention, bacteria and fungus coming into contact with your face causes pimples and breakouts or even worse skin infections. YUCK! Plus when your brushes are dirty your makeup isn't as crisp and clean. My eyeshadow doesn't pop and starts to look muddled due to all of the various layers of different colors on the brush.
How Often Should You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?
As a general rule of thumb, makeup brushes used for the eyes should be cleaned twice a month. However, makeup brushes used for the face should be cleaned at least once per month.

Cleaning your makeup brushes at home is super easy and inexpensive. Really the only 2 things you basically need are Dawn and warm water. Yeah, easy! Typically, I use the hand and towel method to clean and dry my brushes. However, this time I used the Sigma Dry n' Shape to clean and dry my brushes. Although not necessary to get a great clean, I will say the Sigma Dry n' Shape did make drying my brushes a lot easier! No Sigma Dry n' Shape, no worries. I'll go over the hand and towel method below too.
Step 1: Wet
Wet the bristles of the makeup brush with warm water.
Pro Tip: *Remember: never submerge your brushes completely in water. The water weakens the bond between the bristles and the handle.
Step 2: Soap
Add a dime sized amount of Dawn soap to the palm of your hand or to the "Wash" side of the Sigma Dry and Shape.
Step 3: Wash and Rinse
Gently swirl the wet bristles in the palm of your hand with the soap or on the "Wash" side of the Sigma Dry n' Shape. A soapy foam should start to appear. Wash and rinse until the water becomes clear. If needed, re-wet the bristles and add more soap and repeat until suds and water runs clear.
Step 4: Dry
The Towel Method:
Roll 1/3 of a towel so that one side is higher than the other like the picture below. Place the handles of the brushes on the high side so that the brushes are set to dry at an angle.
With the Dry'n Shape:
Place the smaller brushes in the center of the Dry 'n Shape brush side down. And place the larger brushes on the outside of the Dry n' Shape in the brush re-shaping pockets.
